How to maintain the mechanical properties and appearance stability of PLA film under long-term storage conditions?

Release Time : 2026-04-28
PLA film, as a biodegradable and environmentally friendly material, has been widely used in food packaging, blister trays, and medical packaging in recent years. However, as a bio-based polymer, it is easily affected by factors such as temperature, humidity, and light during long-term storage, leading to performance degradation or appearance changes.

1. Control the temperature and humidity of the storage environment

Temperature and humidity are the main factors affecting the stability of PLA film. PLA is relatively sensitive to moisture and is prone to hydrolysis in high-humidity environments, leading to molecular chain breakage and a decrease in material strength and toughness. Therefore, the film should be stored in a dry, low-humidity environment, while avoiding high temperatures to slow down the aging process. It is generally recommended to store it in a warehouse environment with controlled humidity at room temperature to maintain its performance stability.

2. Reduce the impact of light and ultraviolet radiation

PLA film is prone to photo-oxidation under ultraviolet light, causing the surface to yellow, become brittle, and even develop microcracks. To prevent this, prolonged exposure to sunlight or strong light should be avoided as much as possible. Using light-shielding packaging or storing in a dark area can effectively reduce the impact of light on the material's appearance and performance.

3. Optimizing Material Formulation to Enhance Stability

Adding antioxidants, light stabilizers, or hydrolysis-resistant agents to PLA film can significantly improve its stability during storage. These functional additives can slow down the molecular degradation process, maintain the integrity of the material's molecular structure, and thus maintain its mechanical properties and transparency for a longer period.

4. Proper Packaging to Prevent Environmental Intrusion

Good packaging is equally important during storage and transportation. Using well-sealed, moisture-proof packaging materials can effectively isolate moisture and impurities in the air. At the same time, using anti-static or multi-layer composite packaging can reduce dust adhesion and surface contamination, keeping the sheet clean and smooth.

5. Avoiding Mechanical Stress and Stacking Deformation

During long-term storage, improper stacking may generate continuous stress on the sheet, leading to deformation or internal stress accumulation. Therefore, the stacking height should be properly controlled, and flat support methods should be used for storage to avoid localized pressure. This helps maintain the flatness and dimensional stability of the sheet.

6. Control Storage Period and Usage Schedule

Although PLA film possesses a certain degree of stability, its biodegradable nature makes it unsuitable for prolonged storage. Therefore, inventory turnover should be rationally arranged according to actual usage needs, adhering to the "first-in, first-out" principle to avoid affecting material performance due to excessive storage time.

In summary, by controlling environmental conditions, optimizing material formulation, strengthening packaging protection, and rationally managing inventory during long-term storage, the mechanical properties and appearance stability of PLA film can be effectively maintained. These measures not only help extend the material's service life but also provide reliable protection for its application in food packaging and other demanding fields.
